National Gardening Exercise Day is observed every year on 6th June and this year it falls on a Saturday. This special day recognises the important physical health benefits of gardening and exposure to plants, soil and nature. It’s no secret that gardening is not only therapeutic to many, but it’s also great for keeping fit, building muscles and burning calories. There is always so much to do in a garden from weeding , digging , planting , mowing , raking , hoeing and pruning with many people not always appreciating how healthy a pastime gardening is. In the latest article from Interior Landscaping Products, a leading supplier of fire retardant artificial plants , we look at the many benefits gardening has and how you can make it a bit more special and rewarding and prevent those gardening injuries by incorporating a few stretches and aerobic exercises. An hour of gardening is equivalent to 10,000 steps The magic number is 10,000 steps per day. That translates to walking 5 miles a day, which can take well over an hour at a brisk pace. However, did you know that an hour of steady work in your garden matches that? You will also be burning 300 calories every hour and any heavy gardening work can double that. Gardening takes place outside in the fresh air and there’s lots of walking involved, as well as bending. Benefits of gardening: • Combines strength, endurance and flexibility • Excellent for mental health • Provides vitamin D through exposure to sunshine – remember to use a sunscreen • Reduces stress and anxiety • Natural form of therapy • Time in green spaces helps relaxation and improves mood • Develops the senses with colours, scents and textures What to do on National Gardening Exercise Day The main thing to remember is to start slowly and steadily. Include some gentle stretching into your gardening regime as this will help to prevent injury and if you want to up the intensity include some more powerful exercises such as squats, lunges or push-ups. One of the main problems with gardening is that you tend to use your dominant hand and so when incorporating exercises, try to use both hands equally, for example hoe or rake for 5-10 minutes and then swap hands. As with all exercise, remember to breathe, drink lots of water and if you are doing any lifting, use your legs and not your back. Physical and mental benefits and an amazing garden Gardening is certainly rewarding and lets you enjoy the wonderful outside space you have as well as having so many wellbeing benefits. Your garden will not only look amazing, but you will also feel fantastic. How Interior Landscaping Products can help you?
